The light remained stationary, flickering, almost invitingly. I had no choice but to venture into the damp, humid undergrowth. The orb was far too compelling.
I would not see the light of the sun again for the foreseeable eternity.
They appeared from all sides, with a horrible rhythm I can't put into words. Cloaked in the fabric of darkness, their lifeless eyes staring through their horrible, skeletal masks, with a hunger for prey.
And with some unseen cue, they advanced towards me, shuffling at an alarming rate. Then the chanting began.
Their voices combined into one monstrous noise as if the icy plumes of the underworld itself were impaling my very ears. Their unintelligible language conveyed a meaning I could only decipher as a lust for death and chaos. I couldn't fight back. I was too afraid.
I don't remember what happened next.
I awoke, under a starless, lightless sky that shed no light upon the decaying landscape around me, but I could see, as if a dim luminance permeated all nearby space.
As I arose from my contorted, unconscious state, I could make out a small, white sheet of paper in the immediate beyond. I picked it up and struggled to force my tormented eyes to make out the text on the page.
